Alternatives to Syllable-based Accounts of Consonantal Phonotactics

چکیده
PHONOTACTICS Donca Steriade, UCLA Abstract Phonotactic statements characterize contextual restrictions on the occurrence of segments or feature values. This study argues that consonantal phonotactics are best understood as syllable-independent, string-based conditions reflecting positional differences in the perceptibility of contrasts. The analyses proposed here have better empirical coverage compared to syllable-based analyses that link a consonant's feature realization to its syllabic position. Syllable-based analyses require identification of word-medial syllabic divisions; the account proposed here does not and this may be a significant advantage. Word-medial syllableedges are, under specific conditions, not uniformly identified by speakers; but comparable variability does not exist for phonotactic knowledge. The paper suggests that syllableindependent conditions define segmental phonotactics, and that word-edge phonotactics, in turn, are among the guidelines used by speakers to infer word-internal syllable divisions.

Perceptual distortions in the adaptation of English consonant clusters: syllable structure or consonantal contact constraints?
We present the results from an experiment that tests the perception of English consonantal sequences by Korean speakers and we confirm that perceptual epenthesis in a second languge (L2) arises from syllable structure restrictions of the first language (L1), rather than linear co-occurence restrictions. Our study replicates and extends Dupoux, Kakehi, Hirose, Pallier, & Mehler's (1999) results ...
متن کاملA Cross-linguistic Study of Vowel Q Structures: Japanese, Fi
The durational patterns between short and long vowels were investigated at the segmental and lexical level using four different word structures in Japanese, Finnish and Czech. The results confirmed that the Japanese segmental ratios between short and long vowels were longer than in Finnish and Czech; the Czech durational ratios in the second syllable were longer than those in the first syllable...
متن کاملSyllable structure in Old, Middle and Modern Persian: A contrastive analysis
Evolution of languages has always been of interest to linguists. In this paper we study the natural progress of the syllable structure from Old Persian (O.P) to Middle Persian (Mi.P) and up to the Modern Persian (Mo.P). For this purpose all the words containing consonant sequences are collected from specific sources of each of these languages, and then analysed according to the syllab...
متن کاملA Language Independent Approach To Acquiring Phonotactic Resources for Speech Recognition
Building and developing linguistic resources for languages is of prime importance with many areas of application. This paper focusses on a fully automatic approach to the aquisition of a syllable phonotactics for a particular language. In this approach the phonotactic constraints for a language are encoded in a finite-state phonotactic automaton the structure of which can be automatically deriv...
متن کاملThe use of syllable phonotactics for word hypothesization
A search technique incorporating the automatic modeling of lexical variability is introduced for medium or large-vocabulary speaker-independent speech recognition. Current state-of-art systems depend on being able to model the entire language based on acoustic features and the constraints of syntax or interword probabilities. These methods often fail in the presence of multiple speakers, new vo...
